Europa provides updated coverage of world facts and figures. Easily navigated, Europa has a range of choices from simply selecting a country from the drop-down menu to an advanced search option that allows textual search among others. It also allows researchers to perform side-by-side comparisons of nations’ statistics. Users can find information on organizations ranging from newspapers to government agencies around the globe. Along with each entry are citation guides for Europa and. More importantly, links to other resources where available, sometimes references to specific government reports or contact and email links to government agencies or persons of note.

Music Index is a comprehensive guide to music periodicals and literature featuring digitized content from 1970 to present. This database contains cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts of articles about music, musicians, and the music industry for more than 480 periodicals, as well as book reviews, obituaries, news, and selective coverage for more than 200 periodicals.

THE INTERNET GOES ON STRIKE!

On Wednesday, January 18, 2012, many internet websites went on strike to protest SOPA & PIPA. Websites like Wikipedia were unavailable while Google and others are censoring their logos.

Don't know what SOPA & PIPA are? Today is still a great day to learn about it! See NY Times, Wired Magazine, PC World, or NPR.

One of the things the Internet does best is entertain and maybe educate too. For example, The Day the LOLcats died is an excellent video deriding SOPA/PIPA. A comic take on how UE students are reacting to the blackout, see UE's own Dr. MacLeod's cartoon.

Project Muse Reduction

As one element in the Libraries' budget reduction effort, the Project Muse subscription will be reduced from the Premium Collection to the Standard Collection.

Project MUSE is a not-for-profit collaboration between libraries and publishers meeting the goal of disseminating quality scholarship by providing full-text online access to current humanities and social sciences journals. The Standard Collection is a subset of the Premium Collection-the most comprehensive collection offered by MUSE. Over 300 high quality, peer reviewed journals are included in the Standard Collection-63% of the titles available in the Premium Collection. Journal titles available in the Standard Collection may be viewed at Project Muse.

Wheeler Fund Awarded

This year the Wheeler Award funded proposals received from the Archaeology and Art History Department and Harlaxton College.

The Department of Archaeology and Art History is developing upper level courses in medieval archaeology. The award of $600 will purchase books focusing on vikings and medieval England.

Phil Taylor, Lecturer in Music and British Studies at Harlaxton College, will receive $418 to purchase resources to support a new course on special topics with the theme “The Beatles: Popular Music and Society in 1960s Britain.” Consideration of the cultural influence of the Beatles, and the reception of their music, includes key developments in politics, counterculture, fashion, technology and broadcasting.

There is good news in the world about Internet Spam. The number of spam messages sent daily has shrunk to 34 billion (from over 300 billion). So fewer messages about prescription drugs, sex services, etc., make it to your spam folder.

The bad news is the remaining spam is getting smarter. :-(

Google Stops Digitizing Old Newspapers

On Friday, May 20th, Google announced that it had stopped digitizing old newspapers as publishers sought to make money off story archives instead of having them hosted free online. People will still be able to find newspapers already converted to digital format in the Google News Archives at news.google.com/archivesearch but the collection won't grow.

Literature Criticism is a great resource for literary scholars. This particular resource focuses on Classical and Medieval resources. Here you can find major themes in stories like Homer’s Illiad along with literary criticism and interpretation. You could find out how Cicero was received by audiences in its time through current representations.

While this does not yet cover all volumes of Classical and Medieval collection, it is supplemented by physical volumes. The most recent are electronic. PsycInfo contains over 2,450 journal titles. Coverage begins in the 1800s and continues up to the present with additions added weekly. Within the Biography Resource Center database UE Libraries you will find biographies covering an internationally wide range of people from all subject areas. The database covers over 150,000 individuals and their lives. Some entries are more in-depth than others due to availability of information. Each entry gives an objective overview of the subjects life and times as well as quick facts about them such as dates of birth and death, primary residence, positions in life, and so forth.

I just read about Georgia's historic newspaper project. The Athens Historic Newspapers Archive provides online access to five newspaper titles published in Athens from 1827 to 1922. The archive includes the following Athens newspaper titles: Athenian (1827-1832), Southern Banner (1832-1882), Southern Watchman (1855-1882), Daily/Weekly Banner-Watchman (1882-1889), Daily/Weekly Athens Banner (1889-1922).

For instance, two researchers in the Netherlands discovered a treatment for asthma that entailed roller coasters and a trio of researchers in New Zealand demonstrated that people would fall less on icy footpaths if they just worn socks on the outside of their shoes.

JSTOR, short for Journal Storage, is a fulltext database that provides an almost complete collection of the journal titles it contains covering most disciplines. Adioso is a simple travel site that lets you search easily and quickly for the cheapest flight available. It lets you search with a variety of methods, including setting a specific price or lower for airfare. Offerings are slim for now, but this is definitely worth bookmarking for future reference.

Stay.com lets you create your own travel guide. From hotels and restaurants to fitness centers and children's museums, Stay.com lets you create a travel guide based on what YOU want to see. You can also suggest attractions to the creators. Cities on offer are few right now, but the major tourist cities are included and if you're starting out clueless, this is a better place to start than a packaged tour that makes you go places you'd rather not.

Something not travel related: If you don't already have a customized homepage, Start IO can help you get started. Just register and Star IO will walk you through setup. The most popular links are already included, but you can easily add links you'd rather see at start-up and remove links that are irrelevant. You can also customize start pages for group use.

The Libraries have recently purchased Asia-Studies Full-Text Online and Asia-Studies Humanities.

Asia-Studies Full-Text Online is a database that provides access to reports, working paper series, and peer reviewed journals and e-journals. It covers business, economics, government, politics, and social sciences related to the nations of Asia-Pacific. Examples of specific subject coverage include finance, trade, environment, human resources development, best practices in government, fisheries, tourism, education and women's studies to name a few. Statistical reports on Asian countries are also available.

Asia-Studies Humanities is a full-text database that provides access to reports, working paper series, and peer reviewed journals and e-journals. Subject coverage is Asia-Pacific Humanities - Asian languages, arts, culture, history and religion.

Both databases cover 53 countries including all of Asia from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Central Asian republics on east through India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Wheeler Fund Available to Purchase Library Materials

UE Libraries invites proposal applications for the Wheeler Fund. This fund was established in remembrance of Walton M. Wheeler, Jr. (1908-60). Each year the fund is used to purchase special materials designed to enhance the library collection. This year the amount available in the fund is $1,018.

Materials purchased will consist of items an academic department cannot afford to purchase with its budget allocation and which make a significant addition to present library holdings. Proposals fulfill one of the following purposes:

*to purchase materials for a new academic program

*to purchase materials for an existing program

*to purchase cross-disciplinary enrichment materials

The materials will NOT include pieces of equipment or computer software. They will NOT entail continuing costs; for example, a subscription to a journal.

Proposal applications include:

A Statement of Intent—The statement consists of a one-page (200-300 words) description of the overall purpose of your proposal and a description of the type of material you wish the library to acquire. Please submit the Statement of Intent by Monday, November 1, 2010.

Formal Proposal—Statements considered to be most promising will be returned with a request to prepare a formal proposal. The proposal should include: (1) a 300-500 word rationale; (2) an itemized budget listing materials to be purchased; and (3) any additional supporting data the applicant wishes to present. The previously submitted Statement of Intent is not equivalent to the proposal. If you are selected to submit a Formal proposal it is due by Monday, November 22, 2010.

Lookout helps protect your personal information when you lose your phone. It's a free download and they even offer assurance that you're not downloading a virus. You know it's trustworthy when they make a promise right there on the front page of their website.

Critical Past offers 57,000 historic videos and 7 million free photos. You have to purchase access to download, but the consumer format starts at just $2.97. The database is searchable, and definitely worth a look.

For the political minded amongst you, I offer The Living Room Candidate with hundreds of political television ads from the 1950s to the present.

A simple search for jazz instrumentals yielded only three results, but also offered suggestions for what I might have meant when I searched. dig.ccmixter offers Creative Commons remixes of various music types that can be downloaded and used in a responsible fashion. Maybe the library should download a theme song that will play as you walk in the front door.

Quilts on Permanent Display at the Libraries

Ten quilts were re-hung at the UE Libraries in early January 2010 following cleaning and extensive preparation. Quilts are on permanent display on Levels 1 and 3 as an interior design element. Most of the quilts were handmade by Amish craftswomen utilizing typical Amish designs and colors.

Amish quilts were originally displayed with the opening of the Bower-Suhrheinrich Library in 1986.

One quilt created by students and faculty of Evansville College between 1939 and 1943 is a new addition. This special quilt which now hangs on Level One was the result of a three-year effort by Ms. Marcella (Horny) Stein when she was a student. Ms. Stein recently donated this quilt to UE and its Libraries.

UE Libraries recognizes the important efforts of eleven local quilters who are members of the Raintree Quilters Guild. Guild members cleaned and repaired quilts, and they prepared the quilts for re-hanging which will preserve these artworks for years to come. Raintree Quilters Guild members are Dena Bauer, Linda Bohlen, Mary Brass, Jeanne Ethridge, Anita Johnson, Terry Mominee, Judy Morton, Sylvia Priola, Darlene Robinett, Kathy Scheller, and Judy Streetman.

Special thanks are also deserved by UE Facilities which prepared new hardware to re-hang all the quilts and also hung the quilts. Three new Amish quilts are currently being prepared for display in February.

After being sent out for cleaning and repair several months ago, the quilts are being re-hung today in the library. There are also two new quilts added to our collect. They are truly lovely pieces of art and it is obvious that a lot of work went into making these. We are very lucky to have them. Be sure and stop in and take a look.

Yes, that's right, the libraries has finally(!) unveiled Multisearch (and be sure and say that in a deep, superhero voice). An all-in-one search, Multisearch allows you to search databases and our catalog at the same time. You can choose the types of databases you want to search (arts, sciences, business, education) and save searches to a clipboard. Try it out, or, even better, schedule a session with Shane White (x2247) who will be more than happy to guide your class through Multisearch. And let us know what you think. We love it, but then, we're librarians and we love new ways of finding information. :)

Fun Searches

Probably only useful if you're searching for a very specific image, GazoPa is an image search database that allows you to upload an image and search for similar images, or search by URL or keyword. It has some issues, as I discovered when I did a search for I Dream of Jeannie and got pictures of folk I don't know when I was hoping for an image of Major Nelson and Jeannie. I then did a URL search for an image I found of the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring and got the results I wanted. But a keyword search yielded movie results and only two images of Vermeer's painting. Fun if you're terribly bored, or if you desperately need an image and aren't that particular about where it comes from, you can give GazoPa a try. You can also tweet from GazoPa, so feel free to annoy your friends with this app. :)

In much barely more relevant news, Google now has a list of magazines from Google Books. No scholarly journals, clearly, but if you're looking for the latest issue of Orange Coast or Cincinatti Wedding, Google's got you covered.

Colonial Williamsburg eMuseum

Colonial Williamsburg has an eMuseum. Their description of the eMuseum indicates they have an extensive collection of furniture, folk art, glass, textiles, costumes, and just about anything else you could think of. While the resort and living museum are well known, the eMuseum is relatively new and offers researchers who can't travel to Colonial Williamsburg a chance to explore their collections. The collection is searchable as well as browsable. A quick search for linen yielded 245 examples of colonial textiles, from needlework samplers to doll clothes. Check it out!

The lasted addition to the "7 Things You Should Know" series from Educause takes a closer look at Google Wave: Wave offers a compelling platform for personal learning environments because it provides a single location for collecting information from diverse sources while accommodating a variety of formats. By embedding mini-applications and other components, Wave makes interactive coursework a possibility for nontechnical students, moving larger numbers of students away from purely text-based assignments and into multimedia composition.
