News in Brief

Need local news but find yourself in the wrong location? EveryBlock offers news based on location. Enter a zip code and you're directed to news items happening in that location. Only a handful of major cities are in the queue at this time, but the collection has grown since I first explored the site last week.

Lookout helps protect your personal information when you lose your phone. It's a free download and they even offer assurance that you're not downloading a virus. You know it's trustworthy when they make a promise right there on the front page of their website.

Critical Past offers 57,000 historic videos and 7 million free photos. You have to purchase access to download, but the consumer format starts at just $2.97. The database is searchable, and definitely worth a look.

For the political minded amongst you, I offer The Living Room Candidate with hundreds of political television ads from the 1950s to the present.

And finally, Matthew Brady's Civil War photos are available on Flikr.
