Getting Ready to Renovate

We are very excited about the upcoming library renovation starting May 11, 2015.  To accommodate the aggressive construction schedule, the libraries will close to all on May 7th.

Library services to the UE community will be by appointment only and our operating hours will be M-F 8 am – 5 pm (closed holidays).

Access to library materials (books, journals, DVDs, ILLs, etc.) will be readied for pick up in Technical Services, 2nd floor, Clifford Library, accessed through the original Clifford Library entrance.

Questions about the renovation, library services or resources can be directed to library@evansville.edu or 812-488-2482.

As an alum and a parent of a senior at UE I'm concerned at the inaccessibility of the libraries. Before that is taken out of context I also add that the staff at the UE Libraries are the best of any university in the Midwest or Arizona. Research assistance is top notch andit is truly one of the friendliest and most innovative groups in any library I have enjoyed the opportunity at which to study or research.

Is there a projected time that the library will reopen?

My last concern is that the stone being replaced by glass begs the question is this the highest and best use of university resources? What is the cost and the additional space being afforded by this facelift?

Thank you for your comments, Brad.

This summer we faced a challenge that was the result of some good fortune, but which forced us to make a very difficult decision. The original plan for the library project was that we would undertake a comprehensive renovation of only the lower two floors of the Bower-Suhrheinrich Library. However, after a very successful capital campaign conducted by our Office of Development, we realized that we had raised a sufficient amount of money to completely renovate all four floors. The smaller-scale project as originally conceived could have been completed over the course of the summer, but we realized a full-scale renovation would last into the autumn.

We believed that having a completely renovated library interior with additional study space and all-new furnishings was an opportunity that could not be missed, and which would provide a long-term benefit to students that would justify the inconvenience of having portions of the library inaccessible for part of the autumn semester.

In order to lessen the inconvenience to students during the renovation project, the library is offering some of our most critical services from a temporary service desk in the Clifford Memorial Library. The temporary service desk is open Mondays to Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Services available include:

• Course Reserve collection
• Pickup and drop-off of books and other library materials to which staff have access during the renovation project
• Pickup and drop-off of interlibrary loan materials
• Personal research and reference consultations with our Research Assistance Librarian
• "Ask-a-Librarian" online help at https://www.evansville.edu/libraries/helpAsk.cfm

Our complete collection of full-text online journal articles and e-books remains available from the library's web site. Research in scholarly journals and other periodicals is now conducted almost entirely online, and the UE library subscribes to many thousands of journal titles in this format.

In addition, we will automatically place an interlibrary loan request on behalf of any student who desires a title from our book collection if the book in question is currently inaccessible.

Almost all of these services are accessible from the UE Libraries' website.

We are unable to open the library because of delay in the delivery of critical components necessary to fabricate our new service desks, computer desks, and collaborative workstations. The good news is that delivery of some of these components has started and the carpenters are at work. The estimated completion date for the first and second floors of the Bower-Suhrheinrich Library is October 30th. The third and fourth floors should be completed by December 1st.
