Free Medical Journals

Randy recently alerted me to this website Free Medical Journals - http://freemedicaljournals.com/. Access to the journals range from immediate to two years after publication. Most titles are indexed in Medline/PubMed. Access to some international journals not published in English is also provided. Some examples:

  • New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA have free articles 6 months after their publication.
  • Behavioural and Brain Science provides online access immediately after publication.
The site also offers an journal alert service via email.

Wheeler Fund Available to Purchase Library Materials

UE Libraries invites proposal applications for the Wheeler Fund. This fund was established in remembrance of Walton M. Wheeler, Jr. (1908-60). A prominent Evansville attorney, Mr. Wheeler served on the Board of Trustees of Evansville College from 1953-1960. Each year the fund is used to purchase special materials designed to enhance the library collection. This year the total amount, to be divided according to the nature and merit of the proposals received, is $1,250.

The materials will consist of items an academic department cannot afford to purchase with its budget allocation and which make a significant addition to present library holdings. Proposals will fulfill one of the following purposes:

  • to purchase library materials for a new academic program

  • to purchase library materials for an existing program

  • to purchase cross-disciplinary enrichment materials.

The materials will NOT include pieces of equipment or computer software.
They will NOT entail continuing costs; for example, a subscription to a journal.

Proposal applications include:

Statement of Intent – The statement consists of a one-page (200-300 words) description of the overall purpose of your proposal and a description of the type of material you wish the library to acquire. Please submit the Statement of Intent by Monday, November 3, 2008.

Formal Proposal - Statements considered to be most promising will be returned with a request to prepare a formal proposal. The proposal should include: (1) a 300-500 word rationale; (2) an itemized budget listing materials to be purchased; and (3) any additional supporting data the applicant wishes to present. The previously-submitted Statement of Intent is not equivalent to the proposal. If you are selected to submit a Formal Proposal it is due by Monday, December 1, 2008.

Please direct questions to Kathy Bartelt, Collection Development Librarian, at 488-2486 or kb4@evansville.edu.

Ireland Trial in JSTOR

UE Libraries are pleased to announce trial access to the new Ireland Collection from JSTOR. The trial starts today and lasts until October 17, 2008.

The Ireland Collection is an interdisciplinary resource of materials from and about Ireland. At its expected completion in 2009, it will contain a minimum of 2,500 manuscripts, 200 monographs, and 75 ceased and currently publishing journals with moving walls between 1 and 5 years. Complementing JSTOR's existing collections, the Ireland Collection adds resources across the arts, humanities, and sciences in disciplines such as music, art, history, literature, archaeology, mathematics, and biology. Materials span from the 1780s to the present. More information at JSTOR including the title list and handout.

Please contact Kathy Bartelt, Collection Development Librarian, at 488.2486 or kb4, with comments relating to this resource.
